Tile Wax Guide

People are often in a quandary when deciding on the type of tile wax to use for cleaning their floors. Considering that there are different kinds of tile floors, the task of choosing the most effective product can be really confusing. However, before applying any kind of solution it is important to have a good knowledge about a particular surface to determine if it needs just plain detergent and water or it needs a special kind of wax in order to bring out its natural shine.

Common types of tile floors are vinyl, linoleum, ceramic and stone. Some people who are knowledgeable about the different products for cleaning these surfaces will recommend applying tile wax even on materials that do not need it such as vinyl, as the action will protect the floors from spills, stains, scratches and abrasion. Vinyl flooring can easily be cleaned by using a household cleaner which is diluted in water. Heel marks, scratches and abrasion that are commonly seen in on this surface can be difficult to clean with the use of a damp mop, but can be removed with the use of 2-3 drops of baby oil, making sure to clean the surface thoroughly as this might become slippery and dangerous. Mineral oil or olive oil can also be used and will provide similar results.

Linoleum is the easiest floor tile to clean with the use of just plain water, but it is not advisable to use harsh cleaners. Marks caused by furniture skids can be removed with a pencil eraser or diluted household cleaner. Ceramic tiles are easy to clean with solutions made from common household cleaners diluted in water or solution of rubbing alcohol. The tiles can also be made clean by spraying the household cleaner solution to the areas with scuffs while mopping. For marble stone floors, it is necessary to use a special cleaner that is pH balanced. If it’s not possible to obtain a good pH cleaner online, you can easily make a homemade solution with a bit of dishwashing soap and water, but use in small portion as too much can get too sticky or soapy and may become slippery. Harsh chemicals like vinegar and acidic solution should not be used on marble because this could ruin the smooth appearance and leave marks not only on one tile but to the entire floor.

People apply tile wax to their floors to give it shine and make it easier to clean. Vinyl flooring with faded wax finish can be resealed, as this will last longer. When applying wax, the surface must be thoroughly clean and dry. Waxes that require buffing also provide longer lasting results. Just follow the directions on how to properly apply this substance, but it is imperative to carry out this process as thinly as possible. Wax build-ups are yellowish discoloration on some parts of the floor and this can be removed with the use of special cleaners designed for the type of floor that you have. Stripping off wax requires a harsher solution and this should not be done for more than once a year.
